Commodity Markets and Structured Finance

Commodities have experienced many changes over the last 15 years: the concept of ‘peak oil’ has been replaced by the one of ‘peak demand’, in a world where the US is producing a very large amount of crude oil from fracking, adding its barrels to those of Saudi Arabia, Russia and other countries.

Natural Gas has become an important alternative to crude oil as a source of energy because of its fewer emissions and LNG is now a commodity in its own right, vastly traded in the Middle and Far East. In electricity, the use of renewables, such as solar and wind, have broadened across the world due to the availability of powerful batteries.

In a world of Covid, the adequacy of supply of agricultural commodities is crucial and the supply chain must remain effective all across the world. Regarding metals, the price of palladium went above the gold price in 2019 because of its use in electric vehicles.

This comprehensive 2-day course focuses on understanding the formation of prices in the spot market, the key role of Inventory in the shape of the forward curve, the use of derivatives commodity positions and the challenges of investing in commodities. The course provides an in-depth analysis of commodities / currencies and commodities / equities strategies. The issues of delivery and storage, which led to negative WTI Futures prices in April 2020, as well as the modeling implications, will be discussed.

The content is designed for traders in oil and mining companies, financial institutions, managers in pension funds and insurance companies, as well as corporate managers in charge of raw materials and energy purchase.

All delegates will receive a copy of Professor Geman's reference book "Commodities and Commodity Derivatives: Modeling and Pricing for Agriculturals, Metals and Energy" published by Wiley Finance.
